COW MILK PROTEIN ALLERGY
Did you know that like the color of your eyes and the color of your hair, the risk of becoming allergic is an inherited characteristic?
Latest studies show that: if either you or your husband have allergies, your newborn will have a 20% risk of developing an allergy too; and if you both have allergies, your newborn will have a 43% risk of developing an allergy.
During the first six months of your baby's life, the main risk they encounter is to develop a cow milk protein allergy, since milk is his/her only food for the first few months.
Cow milk protein allergy symptoms are very harmful for your baby; they could suffer from eczema, inconsolable crying, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, difficulty of breathing, and so on…Therefore, do not hesitate to consult your health care professional for a proper diagnose and treatment of this disease.
As a first step, you will be asked to eliminate milk and dairy products (such as yogurt, cheese etc…) from your baby’s diet. And if you are breastfeeding, it is advisable that you also eliminate them from your own diet.
However, If you are formula feeding, you will probably be asked to switch your baby’s regular formula to an extremely hydrolyzed formula.
